Artist Statement:
My work focuses on themes around gender, sexuality, feminism, mental health, love, fear, and relationships. Through paint or digital media, I explore color relationships and how highly saturated chroma works and plays together. Through poetry, song lyrics, music, and typography I explore, untangle, and unravel interpersonal relationships, whether familial or romantic, to learn more about how and why we work, play, and move closer together or further apart.

Shaylee (Shay) Dodson is an assistant professor and graphic design coordinator at Kansas City Kansas Community College. She is from Houston, Texas and lives with her partner in the Kansas City area.

Shai Perry
Bio:
Shai Perry is a Kansas-based, black bi-racial woman, artist, mother, curator, and consultant. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from East Tennessee State University, where she studied sculpture and cultural anthropology. She is the Gallery Coordinator and Adjunct Art Instructor at Kansas City Kansas Community College. While pursuing a Master of Fine Arts (MA) in Arts Management and Leadership for Wichita State University. She teaches art appreciation, curates on many platforms, manages the Art Gallery, facilitates the campus collection, and manages artistic visions for public spaces.
In the community, Perry serves as an advocate for the arts on many platforms, this includes being the Wyandotte County Captain for the Arts and Economic Prosperity study six (AEP6), Arts KC Regional Arts Council Mission Support Grant Committee member, and the KCKCC Representative for the Mayor's UG Local Arts Governance Committee. Perry's involvement in the community reaches beyond art organizations. She was Outreach Officer for the steering committee of the Young Professionals Forward, an initiative of the Kansas City, KS Chamber of Commerce. In addition, she was also an ambassador for the KCK Chamber. Perry served as the Marketing Chair for the Friends of the Grinter Museum Board for three years. She also performs these duties on the board of the Wyandotte County Ethnic Festival.
Her leadership in the community transferred to the creation of the Historical Mural Project. Through networking, collaboration, and building rapport, Perry was able to establish an Advisory Committee that held over 60 consultants. Her management led the group to accomplish oral history recordings, a digital timeline database, and a 108ft virtual mural with touchscreen capabilities that captures the full breadth of the local community's historical story. This mural is now a tourist attraction with the KCK Visitor Bureau and Freedom Frontier National Heritage Area.
Innovative themes of diversity, social justice, and identities have led to many accomplishments as a curator. In 2020, her curated exhibit ‘Silenced Narratives’, received the Award of Excellence for Diverse & Empowered Exhibition services and the Award of Commendation for its accompanying catalogues from the Tennessee Association of Museums, a product of the diversity exhibitions initiative of ETSU Tipton & Slocomb Galleries. Perry has presented as a guest speaker at multiple venues. She was the guest speaker for the 2023 Annual Winter Luncheon, for the American Association of University Women Parkville Branch.
Perry continues to bring a more profound cultural context to each project and assist those without a voice in telling their stories. These efforts have brought Perry’s career to a new plateau. She was selected as the 2021 guest juror for the Seeds annual exhibition at the Westobou Gallery in GA. Publications of Perry’s artistic influence can be found in the KC Studio, Flatland KC, The Pitch, and Wyandotte Daily.
Her programming is multidisciplinary and emphasizes all the viewer’s senses. Whether it is an exhibition, festival, or mural project, Perry is adept in engaging the public from multiple angles. She believes that art is for all and not just for the elite. Her work with the Accessible Arts in Greater KC committee, and field projects with the KC School for the Blind. Perry works in cooperation with the KCKCC Student Accessibility and Support Service to collaborate on making the art collection more accessible for all.
Perry’s passion for art access is seen in the organization process of multiple emerging artists programs. Such as art merit badges for the Boy Scouts, The Art of Sewing with Corner Stones of Care foster youth, Multicultural, and Art theme week for KCKCC Kids on Campus summer camp, and District 500 Portfolio Day. To support these programs, she has collaborated with many organizations and received grant funding. In 2020 she organized 8 grant application teams to apply for the Kansas Leadership Center, KS Beats the Virus Campaign funding, awarding $25,000 to projects in Wyandotte county. This work is driving the revitalization of this area.
Perry’s work at KCKCC since 2016, has developed the college as an art focal point for the county and a leader in the art KC metro. Through work with the Downtown Shareholders and Community Housing of Wyandotte County, she is at the forefront of the Third Friday Art Walk in the up-and-coming art district of 6th street in downtown Kansas City, KS. She is on the steering committee for the Art Walk and facilitates an art gallery space dubbed, “The Satellite”, which is an office space by trade.
Perry’s creative innovation and passion to lift others along the way in her journey continue reaching up others along the way in her journey continue to reach new heights. She is a member of the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH), American Association of University Women (AAUW), Kansas Museums Association (KMA), Association of Academic Museums and Galleries (AAMG), Kansas City Kansas Chamber of Commerce, Asian Chamber of Commerce, United Nations Association of Greater Kansas City (UNAKC), and Women in the Arts Networking Group KC.

Bio:
Clint Ricketts is a father, teacher and artist. Clint is the Coordinator of the Art Department at Kansas City Kansas Community College. He received his MFA in printmaking from the University of Kansas in 2010. His work has been featured in New American Paintings and The Kansas City Collection. Clint lives in Lawrence KS, with his partner, their two kids and three cats.
